The Magicians: Season 1

Quentin Coldwater learns that magic is real when he is accepted into Brakebills University in New York. However, he and his friends are under the constant threat of The Beast, a powerful creature from Fillory, a magical land and the subject of Quentin’s favorite childhood stories, Fillory and Further. Quentin and his friends must learn magic, deal with life, and find a way to Fillory and a way to defeat The Beast before he comes and kills them all.

Quentin wakes up in a mental hospital and must set his panic aside to seek the help of the one person he least trusts. Julia is hurt after her fallout with Quentin and commits to learning more powerful spells with the Hedge Witches.

Eliot’s Role: In Quentin’s mind, Eliot is a fellow patient at the Ellsworth Downs Mental Hospital who spends most of his time at the Arts and Crafts table. In the real world, Eliot assists in getting Quentin back to consciousness.

Although everyone should be training for the upcoming Welter’s Tournament, the students are each dealing with a personal distraction that keeps them from staying focused.

Eliot’s Role: Eliot and Margo compete to impress Alice’s aunt, Genji, in hopes of her becoming their mentor. Eliot plays in a game of Welters on a team with Quentin, Margo, Alice, and Kady. Eliot assists Quentin in looking for a magical cure for cancer, resulting in the death of cancer puppy.

The First Years are thrust into the old Brakebills tradition of The Trials, a midterm-slash-hazing ritual in which failing means flunking out for good. Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, Julia meets a fellow blacklisted Hedge Witch.

Eliot’s Role: Eliot and Margo are in charge of testing the First Years.

Quentin and his classmates travel south to train with a demanding professor, who gives Kady some awful news. Meanwhile, Julia faces a personal crisis.

Eliot’s Role: Eliot and Margo prepare for a trip to Ibiza. Eliot meets a former graduate of Brakebills, Mike, and begins dating him. While trying to create the alcoholic drink, gin, Eliot and Margo instead summon a djinn.

Brakebills is thrown into chaos when Penny is violently attacked by someone they thought was a friend while Quentin tries to find a connection to The Beast. After entering a rehab facility, Julia considers giving up magic for good.

Eliot’s Role: Eliot and Mike become closer and Eliot opens up to Mike about his past, growing up on a farm. Mike is possessed by the Beast and in a do-or-die situation, Eliot kills Mike.

Quentin, Alice, Eliot and Penny travel to England to Plover’s estate in search of a missing magic button, but what they find is a hauntingly terrifying vision of the author’s true self. Julia, now out of rehab, searches for real meaning in her magic, but it comes at a very high cost.

Eliot’s Role: While searching for the button at Plover’s estate, Eliot and Alice are tied up by the spirit of Plover’s sister, who had poisoned some of the children who stayed at Plover’s estate in the 1940s.

As Quentin and Alice try to save him, Penny learns that the Neitherlands is not as friendly as he thought. Julia attempts to join the Free Traders, an eclectic group of Magicians.

Eliot’s Role: Margo’s life force is being drained by a golem (a “Margolem”) created by her ex-boyfriend, and Eliot befriends the Margolem.

Prior to a showdown in Fillory, Quentin and crew get a crash course in Battle magic. During preparations, frustrations flare leading to some getting closer and others being pulled apart. Julia and Kady, while on a mission with the Free Traders, finds their limits put to the test.

Eliot’s Role: Quentin, Alice, Penny, Margo, and Eliot look at their possible futures, all of which lead to their deaths, leading them to practice battle magic in preparation with their showdown with the Beast. They find the most effective way to accomplish doing battle magic is to remove their emotions via magic. Eliot and Quentin drink after their practice, leading Eliot to become very drunk and having a three-some with Quentin and Margo.

The students wake up with foggy memories and regret after a night of drinking; Penny reminds everyone that their lives depend on getting to The Neitherlands.

Eliot’s Role: In the Neitherlands branch of the Library, Eliot picks up Mike’s book and burns it, leading Penny, Margo, Alice, and himself to be permanently kicked out of the Library. The group are rescued by Josh, who takes them to his hideout. Eliot eats Josh’s psychedelic carrots, which hinders the group’s transportation between the hideout and the Fillory fountain.

Quentin and Julia are using time magic to get to Fillory, where they try to catch up with the students who are 70 years ahead of them searching for the Beast.

Eliot’s Role: Thanks to a deal Quentin and Julia make with a blacksmith in Fillory 70 years prior, one of the group must marry a member of the family. A knife that draws only royal blood reveals Eliot is to be High King and he must marry the blacksmith’s grandaughter, Fen. Eliot learns he cannot leave Fillory and he marries Fen. He leaves the group mid-preparation to try to impregnate his new wife. When they go after the Beast, Eliot is taken down.
